General Information
The 2009 Pipfruit NZ Conference 'The New Zealand Apple Story' was once again a great success and had the biggest attendance of any Pipfruit NZ conference to date with 340 registrants.
The Honourable David Carter, Minister of Agriculture opened the conference with some encouraging words on the New Zealand's clean, green image and the importance of using this image as a marketing strategy. A raft of excellent
speakers followed including Tony Alexander from the BNZ who gave a sharp, off-the-cuff presentation on the New Zealand and Global Economic Environment.
The two-day conference presented a range of information that gave a basis to the New Zealand apple story. Carbonfootprint of apples discussion featured significantly on the first day of the conference and created a lot of media interest. Debate amongst delegates on this contentious issue was sometimes heated. Pipfruit New Zealand Chief Executive, Peter Beaven remained positive that the NZ pipfruit industry is taking the right approach in establishing a carbon-footprint and finding ways to most efficiently produce and market our fruit in order to minimise carbon emissions.
The mood of delegates was optimistic over the two-days as evident from positive feedback and high levels of attendance at the three sessions. Delegates were given plenty of opportunity for discussion and as a result there was significant development
in a collaborative industry approach to marketing.
Pipfruit NZ staff and directors thank the sponsors of the conference of which many support this event year after a year. Special thanks must be given to Plant & Food Research for their support as major sponsor of the conference for the fifth year running.
