The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) is taking a wide range of measures to prevent avian flu from spreading into the country whilst an outbreak causes havoc in neighboring South Korea, the official news agency KCNA said Monday.
Central and provincial authorities concerned have set up more than 1,600 watch posts in the eastern and western coastal areas of the DPRK, which lie on the main routes taken by migratory birds, said Ri Kyong Gun, chief of the State Emergency Quarantine Committee's veterinary section, KCNA reported.
The committee has worked out regulations on preventing avian influenza and emergency rules of conduct in case of an outbreak, said Ri.
He said that people were being allowed to raise poultry only in yards to prevent contact with migratory birds or their excrement, while dead birds were being tested for diseases.
The country is closely cooperating on the issue with the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization, Ri added.
About 200,000 farm birds were culled in the DPRK following an outbreak of bird flu in March 2005. |
