Starbucks unveils new breakfast menu options

SEATTLE - Starbucks Coffee Co. today unveiled a significant change to its menu offering with the launch of five new permanent breakfast options: Starbucks Perfect Oatmeal, Chewy Fruit & Nut Bar, Apple Bran Muffin, Berry Stella and Power Protein Plate.

Starbucks said the addition of the new menu items is the company's next step in its commitment to providing food and beverage selections that support a healthy lifestyle. All of the items are made with wholesome ingredients such as whole grains, real fruit, nuts and seeds, and omega-3 fatty acids. The products also do not have artificial colors, flavors, sweeteners or high-fructose corn syrup.

"Many Americans are too busy to make a healthy breakfast at home, but it's the most important meal of the day," said Katie Thompson, registered dietitian and senior nutritionist, Starbucks. "Our customers have told us they want delicious choices that offer real nutrition, including whole grains, fruit and lean protein to help fill them up and give them energy to make it to lunch."

The new menu items are:

Starbucks Perfect Oatmeal -The oatmeal may be ordered with three different toppings: a portioned 50-calorie pack of brown sugar; 100-calorie pack of dried fruit; or 100-calorie pack of a nut medley. The oatmeal contains 140 to 390 calories, up to 7 grams of fiber and 1.5 servings of whole grains.

Power Protein Plate -A combination of a hard-boiled egg, 100% whole wheat bagel, peanut butter, cheese and fresh fruit. The plate has 330 calories, 16 grams of protein and 5 grams of fiber.

Berry Stella -First introduced on July 15, the 280-calorie 100% whole grain pastry contains fiber, whole grains, real fruit and more than 200 mg of omega-3 fatty acids.

Apple Bran Muffin -The new muffin is made with whole wheat flour, oats and wheat bran, and is baked with real apples, tart cherries and honey. The 330-calorie muffin contains 7 grams of fiber, 7 grams of protein, omega-3 fatty acids.

Chewy Fruit & Nut Bar ?The bar contains oats, dried fruit, nuts, seeds and honey. The 250-calorie bar has 4 grams of fiber and 5 grams of protein.

A sixth option on the menu is Multigrain Roll with Spreads. The multigrain roll, which is served with a choice of almond butter and strawberry preserves, has 7 grams of protein and 6 grams of fiber and contains 280 calories.

The new breakfast items are the latest in a series of steps taken by Starbucks to improve its healthier options. The company said it has decreased, on average, its core bakery items?calories by 5%, its fat by 15%, and its saturated fat by 8%. The company also has moved to 2% milk as the standard for core beverages in North America and has removed all artificial trans fat in all food and beverages in North America.
