Nova Scotia apple growers lost only 3-5 per cent of the crop when Hurricane Kyle barreled into the province Sept. 28. NS Fruit Growers Secretary Delia Erith told Farm Focus that a small percentage of the potential 2.3 million bushel crop had been knocked off trees during the storm.
The category 1 hurricane was quickly downgraded to a tropical storm after it waded through the Atlantic and landed near Yarmouth. While winds did reach 124 k/hr in Shelburne County, NS and over 100 mm of rain drenched Grand Manan, New Brunswick, Kyle was not as fierce as anticipated and did very little damage in the region.
