Farmers of Joypurhat, the largest potato growing area of the country, are facing problems in their produce there are very few cold storage for potato preservation. The farmers of the district are being compelled to sell their potatoes at unsatisfactory price.

In Joypurhat district 13 cold storages are being run and those could preserve only 103,045 metric tonnes which is too little to preserve the potato grown.

According to DAE sources, this year 36,870 hectares of land has been brought under potato cultivation while the target was 33,40 hectares. Cardinal, Dimond, Ganola and other different types of potato were cultivated in the district.

The production target was fixed 5,45,160 metric tonnes. But the target is likely to be exceeded and may reach 7 lakh metric tonnes, the DAE office expects.

Good weather is likely to help the target to be exceeded despite some minor problem.
