A non-government organisation Nazrul Smriti Sangstha (NSS) has under taken practicable plan to produce more vegetables in Amtally upazilla of Barguna district to open new horizon of self-sufficiency. Financed by World Fish Centre (WFC) and cooperated by ID, the said NGO has been distributing vegetables see among the farmers. So far seeds of gourd, gadda bean, biter gourd and snake gourd have been handed to 857 producers who will cultivate on the banks of ponds. There have been plenty production of beans and gourds.
Joynul Fakir of Manikjhuri village said, he sold 118 gourds in last 15 days and Ayub Ali Talukder of Garbaria village earned taka 7,000 in the month of January selling beans and gourds. Barek Khan of Chawra said, benefited much from the discussion meeting on vegetables cultivation. Though the market of gourd is not at present hopeful, bean has good demand. The price of this kin of bean has not fallen despite good supply in view of increasing demand. It now sells at taka 45 to 50 per kilo.
Agro-business Development Officer Sushanta Ripon of ID said that 10 to 12 kilograms of beans are available from each plant There are about 4,300 plants in Amtally and Kalapara upazillas from which ample beans could be produced. Abdul Mannan, Technical Specialist Abdul Mannan of WFC said, it is possible to produce several hundred tonnes of vegetables on pod banks.
