Strawberry season in Spain greatly delayed
Time:22 Mar 2010
Posted by 21food.com

The strawberry season in Spain is difficult. The country experienced heavy downpours again and that is not good for the sector. Supply has been delayed as a result compared to 2009, because the development of the strawberries has been delayed by the many cloudy days. Arnold Heemskerk of Frutas Esther says, that the situation is the same as a month ago. "The weather remained mediocre and the strawberries are not ripening."

Arnold says that the supply has increased in the meantime, especially the varieties Splendour, Fortune and Ventana. "These are not so tasty, but are also less sensitive to cold than Candonga, the variety grown by us." He explains that volumes are about one third of those of a year ago. "It appears that the season has been delayed by a month". "The weather has improved and if the sun shines for 3 or 4 days the volumes will increase considerably."
