Oil-proofing agent in food packaging can cause blood pollution
Time:23 Nov 2010

The researchers of University of Toronto found that the chemicals in junk food packaging material and bags of microwave popcorn can be transferred to food and be adsorbed by body, and then the blood will suffer chemical pollution. The findings are published on a recent publication "Environment and Health Outlook".

Perfluorinated carboxylic acids (PFCAs) is a biodegradable chemical, mainly used to manufacture non-stick pan and food packaging materials' waterproofing agents and anti-fouling agent. Now, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) has been found in human body around the world.

Jessica and Scott Mobley lead the rap group from Department of Chemistry, University of Toronto conjecture that the source of perfluorinated carboxylic acid which in human body may be relevant to polyfluoroalkyl phosphate(PAPS). PAPS is used as Oil-proofing agent in fast food packaging materials and microwave popcorn bags.

The researchers let rat to take orally or to be injected PAPS for three weeks, and then monitor the concentration of polyfluoroalkyl phosphate, perfluorinated carboxylic acid metabolite and perfluoro caprylic acid in their blood. Although the researchers still can?ˉt prove polyfluoroalkyl phosphate is the only source of perfluorinated carboxylic acid and perfluoro caprylic acid which in human body, this reaearch found that polyfluoroalkyl phosphate metabolites is the main source of perfluorinated carboxylic acid and perfluoro caprylic acid. So the perfluoro caprylic acid which found in human body may be related to human touch polyfluoroalkyl phosphate in normal time.

Now, the interest of governments around the world monitor of polyfluoroalkyl phosphate is growing. The governments of Canada, U.S and Europe have stated that they will long-term monitor of these chemicals. The new research provide valuable information for regulatory institution to draw up concerning measures.
