NFA prepositioned rice stock sufficient for typhoon ?°Dodong?±
Time:14 May 2015

Efforts to boost procurement, as well as to preposition rice around the country has yielded good results, as the National Food Authority (NFA) has enough rice stocks in preparation for the arrival of typhoon ?°Dodong?± (International Name ?°Noul?±).

The NFA has been ramping up procurement of palay in key areas around the country, in order to buffer its stocks in case of calamities. Food security is a key concern of the government, particularly in light of past calamities, the recent threat of Mount Bulusan?ˉs volcanic activity, as well as the arrival of typhoon ?°Dodong.?±

Sufficient supply in typhoon-prone areas

There is sufficient supply in areas threatened by the storm, even in areas traditionally known to have low rice stock due to the lack of local supply, such as Northern and Eastern Samar.

Northern Samar has 38,409 bags of rice, good for eight days based on daily rice consumption of 4,880 bags. Eastern Samar, meanwhile, has 45,907 bags of rice, good for 19 days based on daily rice consumption of 2,460 bags.

Northern Samar is currently under public storm warning signal number 1, according to weather bureau PAGASA.

Bicol, under public storm signal number 1, also has sufficient rice stock. The Bicol region has 15,138,680 bags of rice, enough to last for 19 days based on estimated daily rice consumption.

Due to the quick action of local farmers, who trekked to local buying stations to sell their supply before ?°Dodong?± significantly affects the weather in the area, palay procurement for Albay and Sorsogon is 98.5 percent completed for the month of April, and 50 percent completed for the second crop of the summer season for the months of January to June of 2015.

Rice supply in areas under public storm warning signal number 2 is also sufficient. NFA data shows that the whole of Region 2 has a total rice equivalent of 765,469 bags.

Areas currently under public storm warning signal number 3 also has sufficient supply. Aurora has total rice stock inventory of 53,545 bags. Both under Region 2, Cagayan has total rice equivalent of 93,971 bags, enough for 16 days based on daily rice consumption, and Isabela has a total rice equivalent of 316,100 bags, enough to last for 31 days.

The NFA has also activated its Operation Centers in the Central Office as well as in the regions affected by Typhoon Dodong.

Typhoon ?°Dodong?±, with maximum sustained winds of 160 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 195 kph, is expected to make landfall over the coast of Isabela-Cagayan early Sunday morning. According to PAGASA, it is forecast to exit the Philippine landmass through Aparri, by Sunday afternoon. It is expected to exit the Philippine area of responsibility Monday night.
