Baxters Gives Local School a Taste of Careers in Food and Drink
Time:22 Sep 2015

Pupils from Millburn Academy were recently given a taste of what it is like to work in the food and drink industry through a school visit from iconic Scottish food and drink manufacturer Baxters.

120 students participated in workshops throughout the day to experience the diverse and rewarding careers the food and drink industry has to offer.

Kat Wood, a Food Technologist at Baxters, ran sessions on food production from concept development, quality control and labelling, through to the delivery of the final product and marketing.

The students also took part in a master class on making chutney by Darren Sivewright, the company's Executive Chef.

The visit was part of the Scottish Food and Drink Federation's (SFDF) Food and Drink Ambassadors Network which was created to enthuse young people about the range of careers available in the food and drink sector. The scheme is funded by Skills Development Scotland.

Speaking of his experience, Darren said:
?°Kat and I really enjoyed our time at Millburn Academy. The pupils were very engaged in the workshops and asked a lot of interesting questions. A few of them really surprised me with the extent of their food knowledge. I hope that we have highlighted the varied and rewarding career opportunities the food and drink industry has to offer and have encouraged the pupils to consider it as a possibility for their futures.?±

Pupils involved in the workshops will be making chutney to sell for their school Poppy appeal.

Ann MacRae, Gill Smith and Rita Karikas, Home Economics Teachers at Millburn Academy, said:
?°This was a superb and interactive day. It was a great opportunity for our S2 pupil's to gain an insight into the food and drink industry from the Executive Chef and Food Technologist from Baxters. The pupils have gained the knowledge that they can apply when making their own chutneys for charity.?±

Moyna Kennedy, SFDF's Food and Drink Skills Ambassadors Network Manager, said:
?°Kat and Darren are excellent role models for young people considering a career in food and drink. From their personal experience they were able to explain what it is like working at Baxters and all the opportunities and rewards the sector has to offer.?±
