Widely acknowledged as India's largest International Exhibition on Food products, retailing, import & export, processing & packaging machinery and allied industries, the 9th India Foodex 2017, inaugurated by Karnataka Governor Vajubhai Rudabhai Vala, concluded at BIEC in Bangalore on August 30. Complimenting the organizers, Media Today Group, the governor expressed confidence that said such an effort raised the level of awareness about the availability of technological solutions and knowledge to take India?ˉs food sector forward. "It gives me a great pleasure to declare open the 9th AgriTech India 2017 and India Foodex Exhibition."

Several high-profile dignitaries were present at the inaugural ceremony. After the National Anthem and a guard of honour presented to him, the Governor, told, "We need to address the challenges and make food industry competitive by utilizing the modern techniques as well as application of business principles. Our technological knowledge will be able to produce more as well as improve the quality of the food production."

The Governor took a round of the grand exposition and expressed his appreciation of the technologically best displays of the pavilions. He said, "We need to address the challenges and make food industry competitive utilizing the modern techniques as well as application of business principles. Growth opportunities

While entire India has many opportunities, the southern part has many advantages and offers ample opportunities for the growth of food sector. The state is a leader in knowledge based, technology driven, industries like information technology, biotechnology, electronics, telecommunication, aerospace and other industries etc. The state of Karnataka is distinguished as the knowledge hub of Asia and the state also has the largest number of R & D Centers in India. Food Industry also requires support of several fields and cannot be limited to farm operation only. Post Harvest technology is required to reduce the wastage as well as improving the quality and delivering the food safely to the consumers. This involves handling of the produce, transportation, packaging, storage, cold chain management, labeling etc.

The concept of food production has attained a broader dimension including food processing industry, infrastructure services, specialized agricultural machinery manufacturers, supply chain management experts. With the introduction of food safety standards many more trade related issues are brought under Food Industry.

The Ninth edition of India's largest food and agribusiness exposition series, India Foodex, offered an impressive show of food processing, packaging, storage and warehousing technologies to the visitors and delighted the exhibitors with overwhelming response. This annual three day expo concluded on 30th August 2017. Over the years, the series have gained immense popularity among the leading international players of the sector and provide the opportunity to emerging players to make their mark on the industry. This year, more than 500 exhibitors displayed their products at the show receiving a footfall of over 35000 trade visitors.

9th India Foodex, along with its concurrent shows namely, 8th edition GrainTech India, 7th DairyTech India, 4th MeatTech Asia and 2nd SnackBev India was organized to promote comprehensive growth of India's food industry. The aim of the show series is to minimize the wastage of food in India through promoting efficient food processing and storage technologies and systems.

Promoting Newest Technologies

As per trade sources, India wastes food grains worth huge amounts every year because of weaknesses in storage systems & techniques and deficiencies in supply chain. Through India Foodex, Media Today Group has been helping the Indian food industry to build an effective supply chain to ensure what is produced in the farm reaches the consumer in good shape. In fact, what is imperative is to plug every loophole in the food production and distribution system, which means use of effective available technologies and building of a modern supply chain.

The participation of foreign companies in India Foodex has helped in the up gradation of many units in India. India Foodex 2017 drew several participants across the sectors not only from the country but also from international players. Visitors said the exhibition was useful to them and entrepreneurs to learn and take entrepreneurship to the next level. This multi-show attracted over 35000 visitors and more than 500 exhibitors from all parts of India and over 30 countries.

Food Segments

The popular expo hosted stalls showcasing tools and technologies from almost all key food segments. The major attraction was the "Culinary Championship & Inter Hotel Competition?±, organized by SICA with the support of Indian Federation of Culinary Associations and Amagi Media. Senior Professionals from different segments shared their experience with the visitors. There was a large presence of Professionals and on-site media attention.

This was a great chance to gain a positive association with an educative event that promoted Food Professionals. The event attracted numerous hospitality & food industry delegates from different companies across the country. AgriBusiness Excellence Awards

The ceremony held on August 28 was a token gesture of appreciation to those who understood the soul of Indian food industry and transformed it to make a mark in the Global market. Though a new addition to the series, it garnered immense response from the industry. The prominent ones were awarded as a token of appreciation. They also got overjoyed by the reaction they received at the show.

Another segment parallel to the ongoing Culinary Championship & Inter Hotel Competition was organized in association with SICA. A conference on "Food Processing" by All India Food Processing Association (AIFPA) attracted food exporters from far off locations. It was a challenging effort to cover all aspects of food production and sale.

The show offered immense opportunities to the exhibitors as well as the visitors. Foreign visitors, embassies, delegates incalculably appreciated the expo series which offered a valuable B2B business meetings, knowledge exchange, global exposure to the initiates, networking for the stakeholders, and a lot more. The show promoted technological up-gradation and helped in familiarizing with the benefits of using latest technologies.

A rewarding achievement for the organizers as well as the business delegates was a discussion on of future co-operation planned by Korean Government. Further, DD Kisan and DD Chandana, both channels, broadcast the expo, offering more exposure. CIFTCI from Turkey took a live coverage. Huseyin Dogancukuru, media person of CIFTCI greatly appreciated the expo and highlighted the potential need of Indo-Turkish co-operation.

Over the three days of the expo, potential clients managed to meet many leading companies from all over the world that got an overwhelming response. A wide range of participants made their presence felt at the exhibition.

India Foodex is proven to be an ideal platform for launching latest machinery and technologies for processing and packaging, storage, and supply chain. The event has been growing in size through the course of successive years.

Paving way for Start-ups

One road to realize the Prime Minister's agenda of "Make in India" is through foreign investments and another of course is through innovations and efforts within the country. India Foodex series has helped in promoting both these approaches. Furthermore, it has also helped them in exploring possibilities of joint-ventures with foreign companies.

Many foreign exhibitors from more than 30 countries, including Bangladesh, South Africa, Switzerland, UAE, Korea, Nigeria, Japan, Canada, Thailand, Nepal, Algeria, Qatar, New Zealand, Turkey, Ukraine, Russia, Iraq, Oman and Sri Lanka, have established many start-ups. Many leading Brands like Big Basket, ITC, Swiggy, Franchise Connect, UNIBIC, Foodex Press, Himalaya, Mandi Bazar, Maiyas, Future Consumer, Britannia and a lot more visited India Foodex with great enthusiasm. Many top ranking professionals from universities namely Amity University and Jain University, catering and hospitality sectors visited and viewed it as the best that has great latent potential waiting to be tapped in the right way and through right means.

Visitors showered praise on the exhibition?ˉs organizers, Media Today Group, for connecting visitors with so many global leaders in food industry and to technologies under a single roof. Agriculture minister of Karnataka also visited and praised the exhibition thoughtfully. He also presented an appreciation award to a student, rewarding him by providing free education facilities till his Master's Degree. The gesture won the appreciation of everyone present there.

According to the organizers, India Foodex 2017 successfully brought together all the agrarian business stakeholders under one umbrella. It covered all facets of Indian Food Industry. The event series has been consistently helping to bring together the stakeholders from each stage of food production, from seed suppliers to processing and packaging companies and retailers. The unique platform has contributed a great deal to the evolution of Indian food industry.

The number of exhibitors and visitors has been increasing annually. Many departments, organizations and agencies of the Government of India supported 9th AgriTech India including National Centre for Cold Chain Development, All India Food Processing Association, Food Processing and Packaging Machinery Industry Association (India), Coffee Board (Govt. of India), Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry and Government of Karnataka.

Apart from these, India Foodex also has strong support from the members of prominent Indian agricultural and food organizations, who visited the show and facilitated meaningful discussions and business deals, adding strength and value to the event.

Notable exhibitors included Buhler India, Hilda Automation, Husqvarna (Platinum Sponsor), Sonalika, Mahindra & Mahindra, Alapala, Reliance industries, Selis, MySilo, Unomac, Bry-Air (Asia) Pvt. Ltd. along with organizations like Director of Horticulture & Plantation Crops (Tamil Nadu) and APEDA.

Overall, the exhibition and conferences were a great success. The consecutive success of the event has encouraged the participants to look forward to the next edition with more enthusiasm. The organizers announced the dates for the next series, i.e. 31st August to 2nd September, 2018 in Bangalore.
