| The carambola (Averrhoa carambola), also known as starfruit, is believed to have originated in the south of China and East Asia, and it has been cultivated in China for 15 centuries. It has been spread over the tropics and the subtropics. In China, it is grown chiefly in the provinces of Guangdong, Guangxi and Fujian, and Guangdong produces the most and best carambola. Carambola fruits are ovate to ellipsoid. Slices cut in cross-section are star shaped. The flesh is light yellow to yellow, translucent, crisp and very juicy, without fiber. The fruit has a more or less oxalic acid odor and the flavor ranges from very sour to mildly sweet. The so-called sweet types rarely have more than 4% sugar. The carambola can improve ones appetite, secretion of saliva and circulation of the Qi, according to traditional Chinese medicine. It is helpful in curing and preventing sore throat, cough, oliguria and hemorrhoids |
