This lip-smacking 12yo An Cnoc (formerly Knockdhu) is a top-quality proponent of the non-sherried Speyside style, showing polished malt and a delicious spiciness throughout a warm, complex palate and lasting finish. Nose: Barely noticeable phenols with subtle oak and dried fruit accompanied by hints of lime and barley sugars. Rounded and silky initially, but with time develops into a more robust and malty nose. Candied Mackintosh apples threaten to overpower an almost too delicate frame. Palate: Whiff of initial oak smoke which quickly give way to vibrant, effervescent citruses that play havoc with the sides of the tongue. Heftier than expected, but not overpowering. Barley sugar follows from the nose, with honey, green pear and star fruits providing a succulent and juicy mouth feel. Finish: Rapidly drying, leaving a soft lemon and barley sugar taste in the mouth. Surprisingly short, but in a refreshing kind of a way.
Built in 1846, Caol Ila is the largest of the eight working distilleries on the island of Islay (situated off the west coast of Scotland), with a production capacity of 3 million litres per year. In the classic Islay style, Caol Ila is made predominantly with peated malt and the resulting phenols have a big influence on the final flavour of the whisky, as does the salty coastal air that the casks ‘breathe’ during maturation. One of the most approachable Islay malts.
