DESCRIPTION
Root of Pueraria lobata In rectangular thick slices cut longitudinally or small square pieces, 5-15 cm long, 0.5-1cm thick. The outer bark pale brown, with long gitudinal wrinkles, rough, cut surface yellowish-white, showing indistinct striations.Texture pliable and strongly fibrous. Odourless, taste, slightly sweetish.
Root of Pueraria thomsonii Cylindrial, subfusiform or semi-cylindrical, 12-15 cm long, 4-8 cm in diameter, some in longitudinally or obliquely cut thick slices, varying in size. Externally yellowish-white or pale brown, or greyish-brown when unpeeled. Transversely cut surface showing pale brown concentric rings formed by fibres, longitudinally cut surface showing several longitudinal striations formed by fibres. Heavy, texture hard and starchy.
ACTION
To relieve fever, to promote the production of body fluid, to facilitate eruption, and to arrest disrrhea.
INDICATIONS
Fever, headache and painful stiffness of the nape in exogenous affections, thirst, diabetes, measles with inadequate eruption, acute dysentery or diarrhea, stiff and painful nape in hypertension.
REFERENTIAL ADVICE
1. Expelling the evils in the mucles and relicving fever
It is indicated in exterior syndrome marked by fever, anhidrosis, headache, stiffness of the nucha and back. For treating the patient with remarkable chilliness, it may be combined with Herba Ephedrae, Ramulus Cinnamomi, Radix Paeoniae Alba, etc.; for the patient with high fever, combined with Radix Bupleuri, Radix Scutellariae Gypsum Fibrosum, etc.
2. Promoting the production of body fluid and arresting thrist.
For treating the exterior syndrome of febrile disease accompanied with thirst, or treating diabetes, it is often used as a single medicine or combined with drugs for dispelling evil heat and promoting ghr production of body fluid.
3.Promoting eruption for measles
For treating measles at the early stage or with retardation of eruption it may be combined with Rhizoma Cimicifugae, Radix Paeoniae Alba,etc.
4. Ascending spleen-energy and relieving diarrhea
For treating diarrhea due to deficiency of spleen-energy it is ofren combined with Racix Codonopsis Pilo-sulae, Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, Poria, etc.; for treating diarrhea or dysentery due to heat and accompanied with the exterior syndrome, with Rhizoma Coptidis, Radix Scutellariae, etc.
Besides, it is also indicated in hypertensive cerebropathy and used to relieve such symptom as headache, dizziness, stiffness of the nucha etc.; and it may also be used to treat angina pectoris due to coronary heart disease, and the effects are fairly good. |
