The Union of Agricultural Co-operatives of Lesvos is one of the biggest enterprises on the island of Lesvos (the third biggest island of Greece). LESEL collects, grades and bottles all the olive oil produced by approximately 13.000 members (62 local olive presses) which belong to LESEL. It was founded in 1929 and soon became known as LESEL. Its main goal was the marketing of olive oil produced on the island of Lesvos. This objective remains to the present day and the Union is still known as LESEL within the trade both in Greece and abroad.
LESEL is the only organization of it's kind on Lesvos-ie each olive press situated in most of the towns and villages of lesvos are a co-operative of all the farmers residing in or near the village. These co-operatives formed a union of co-operatives to represent them and act as a forum in which each co-operative can air his views and complaints. This Union is what we know today as LESEL-The Union of Agricultural co-operatives of Lesvos.
It is the biggest Co-operative organization within the olive oil industry of Greece. As far as the sales of olive oil are concerned, LESEL is one of the leading suppliers of olive oil to the Greek market.
LESEL has its central offices in the capital town of Lesvos, Mytilene, and the laboratory, storage and bottling unit is located a few miles away from Mytilene, in the picturesque seaside village of Pamfila. |
