First Day of Harvest

Olive Oil is one of the most important symbols in the Mediterranean countries. Five milenium ago the most important civilizations used olive oil as one of the key elements in their cultures. Thus the liquid gold, as Homer called it, has a special meaning that goes beyond the gastronomy. For instance, olive oil was thus very common in Greco-Roman cuisine. According to legend, the city of Athens obtained its name because Athenians considered olive oil more essential than water, thus preferring the offering of the goddess Athena (an olive tree) over the offering of Poseidon (a spring of water gushing out of a cliff). The Cretans were also the first Greeks to use the oil to anoint themselves while taking exercise in the gymnasia. The practice was intended to eroticise and highlight the beauty of the male body. Olive Oil was also used by the ancient Hebrews. Olive oil of the highest purity was poured daily into the seven cups of the golden candelabrum in the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. Olive oil was also used for anointing the kings of the kingdoms of Israel and Judah. From this ritual of anointing, the expected savior of the Jews is called the Messiah (" anointed one" ). The word Christ is a literal translation of Messiah, the anointed one. Used as a medicinal agent in ancient times, and as a cleanser for athletes (athletes in the ancient world were slathered in olive oil, then scraped to remove dirt), it also has religious symbolism related to healing and strength and to "consecration"- God's setting a person or place apart for special work.

From ancient times Hispania (that portion of the Roman Empire encompassing most of present-day Spain and Portugal) was the largest supplier of this precious liquid, and their olive oils were considered the holy grail of oils and thought to have the finest quality. The oil was shipped in terra-cotta amphoras (large, two-handled jars with narrow necks). Thanks to its climate and orography, olive oil production was gradually concentrated in the south, in Andaluc¨aa

Thus, olive oil growing means for Andaluc¨aa much more than collecting a fruit: it is life, because everybody depends, in a way or another, directly or indirectly, on the olive trees. When autumn arrives, Andaluc¨aa prepares itself for the campaign. All people look at the sky waiting for the rain, they meet together to plan the crop, special dishes are prepared to celebrate the arrival of the harvest.

With our "First Day of Harvest" we want to pay homage to the whole liturgy that surrounds the olive oil collection in special to the magic of the first day, when the farmer waits for the first oil, longing for the quality that would reward the effort of the whole year.

To celebrate that special moment we have had the invaluable help of our friend and designer Sara Navarro. She, as well as the Va?¨? Family, belongs to a family business whose origins date back to several generations. The Navarro family is also strongly rooted in the culture and tradition of their land, although they have also bet for innovation and quality as key points for their business. We really hope that with our "First Day of Harvest" you can enjoy the best olive oil in its more original and genuine state.
