Product Oringin: Turkey
Description: Origin:
Turkey
Background:
The plant genus Capsicum represents a diverse group of pepper plants from the well known sweet green bell pepper to fiery hot chilies. It has been a part of the human diet since about 7500 BC. Between 5200 and 3400 BC, Native Americans were growing chile plants, making them among the oldest cultivated crops of the Americas. Christopher Columbus is credited with having given red peppers their name. Prior to that time, the term pepper referred to black pepper, a genus unrelated to Capsicum. The new chile rapidly spread across Europe, and since that time was incorporated into much of the world's cuisines.
The term chile means pepper (Capsicum), whether or not the product is hot or sweet. It has evolved, however, to refer to the hot and pungent species of the family. Bell pepper generally refers to the sweet, block-shaped chile types with four lobes. The term bell was first mentioned in 1699 by an English pirate named Wafer, who found them growing in Panama.
Description:
Turkish sundried peppers are produced from a variety known as Topepo, or 'tomato' pepper in Turkey. This round shaped red pepper resembles a tomato, and when dried has a smoky, sweet taste, similar to roasted red bell peppers. Bedemco was instrumental in the development of this product in Turkey. We now offer our customers a ready to eat product available in uniform, wedge-shaped pieces which are ideal for pastas, salads, sandwiches, entrees and appetizers ? any application that will be enhanced with a rich sweet pepper flavor.
Peppers, sweet red ones in particular, offer among the highest concentrations of vitamins C and A. They have a long history of medicinal applications, dating as far back as the Mayans, who used them to treat respiratory conditions and sore throats. The Aztecs used them to relieve toothaches. The active ingredient in peppers, capsaicin, is used in a variety of liniments and creams to reduce muscle and joint pain, alleviate headaches and reduce swelling and itching.
