Molasses is a thick, sweet, golden-brown liquid obtained in the refining of sugar.
Molasses was the principal sweetener in every North American household and it was exported from various Carribean locations mainly aboard schooners, brigs and brigantines.
Molasses was transported in large oak barrels called puncheons. These puncheons were carried from the warehouses to the wharf using a spyder. A spyder was a two-wheeled carrier which enabled 3 men to move the heavy 90 gallons puncheons filled with molasses to the dockside.
