There is a legend saying that a certain archbishop of the German city Mainz, whose name was Williges, was ridiculed by the nobles of that time for having come from a poor family , when the usual was that only noblemen occupied such a position, and not feudal people. In order to show contempt for his origins, people used to draw wagon wheels with chalk on the doors and walls of his residence. In a modest and sensible reaction to such behaviour, the archbishop had a shield made, bearing a white wagon wheel over a red background, with the sentence 'Williges, Williges, think of where you came from'.
