5-Hydroxytryptophan is the immediate precursor in the biosynthesis of the neurotransmitter 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT orserotonin). 5-HT itself is derived biochemically from the essentialprotein amino acid L-tryptophan.

5-HTP, along with carbidopa, is used in Europe as a pharmaceutical agent for the treatment of depression. It has also been used in the treatment of Gilles de la Tourette syndrome and for the treatment of the self-mutilation symptoms of Lesch-Nyhansyndrome. 5-htp is an orphan drug in the U.S. for the treatment of postanoxic intention myoclonus, a rare complication of CPR(cardiopulmonary resuscitation). It is used in this disorder in combination with carbidopa.
