Although
the current trend is to decrease salt intakes, westerners still consume around 10 grams per day instead of the 5 grams recommended by the WHO. Reducing salt (and specifically sodium) in our diets has become a major social issue in terms of public health. Result of a huge work of research and development: AlgySalt®, the new clean label solution for sodium reduction in several food products, will be presented at the Food Ingredient Europe (FIE) in Frankfurt from the 19 th to 21 th November 2013.We are also pleased to announce that AlgySalt® is shortlisted for the Fi Excellence Awards 2013.
Less sodium in food products: a voluntary action of food industry
Though essential for the body’s proper functioning, salt can be harmful when it is consumed in quantities above the recommended daily intake. Salt overconsumption increases the risk of high blood pressure, stomach cancer and other cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, in order to take into account the new consumers’ needs in terms of nutrition & health, food manufacturers launch programs in view of reducing sodium in some of their products.
Considering the major and complex objective of reducing sodium for food industries, Setalg (a ROULLIER Group Company) has launched AlgySalt®, a natural ingredient specifically developed from seaweed extracts for sodium reduction and containing up to eight times less sodium than salt (NaCl).

AlgySalt® is the ultimate clean label and cost-effective solution for reducing sodium in food products without compromising their acceptability.
Thanks to high natural mineral amounts and natural flavour boosters, our innovative algae-based salt replacer can reproduce the organoleptic and technological properties of salt.
Indeed its natural and specific compounds can enhance the global flavours of the new low salt products without metallic taste nor off-taste.
Moreover, thanks especially to higher mineral contents (generally compared to other vegetable-based salt replacers), AlgySalt® offers also real good technological performances and allows to limit losses of yield during the production process of certain low salt products.
AlgySalt® allows to replace salt (1 to 1 substitution) up to 30% in a large range of products (e.g. meat and seafood products, ready-to-eat meals, soups, sauces, snacks…).
With a sodium content up to 8 times lower than salt (NaCl), AlgySalt® can meet the nutritional claim “25% less salt”. Its label declaration is “natural flavouring”.
