In appreciation and ecological recognition of this fishing, non-governmental organization Earth Island Institute has certified since 1998 that Azorean tuna is "Dolphin Safe", owing to its non-predatory nature.

This system of responsible fishing, which supports the marine ecosystem and the environment, also guarantees the livelihood of coastal populations living from fishing, contributing to the economic dynamics of the island of São Jorge.
