Deglet noor, meaning "finger of light" is one of 300 varieties ofdates. it's believed this one is the "queen of dates" or "miniaturesun". It can not be found outside of Algeria and Tunisia.Etymologically, the word comes from the Dejla Degla which is the Arabicname of the Tigris River in Iraq, a region from which this variety wasimported a few centuries ago. This variety is particularly rich inenergy (295 kcal per 100 grams). Fresh, it is composed of 70% water,sugar and Vitamin C. It also contains minerals. This variety is grownin Algeria in the region Ziban (Biskra) and in the states of the aridsouth-western United States (California, Arizona and Texas) where theclimate resembles that of North Africa.
