The West Coast Autopacker is a pelagic fish processing machine that is designed and built to do the following automatically:

• Remove fish heads.

• Remove fish tails.

• Remove fish viscera.

• Fill fish cutlets into empty cans.

  Operation method of the West Coast Autopacker.

   

  Up to 16 operators load fish from a central Conveyor belt onto 2 block belts (modular plastic chain with moulded pockets for fish) which run parallel to each other, 750mm apart. These block belts run between rotating circular blades that cut off the heads and tails. The viscera are removed through an orifice plate by vacuum. The HGT fish pieces then fall from each block belt into 2 separate distribution wheels which then, depending on the pre-set number of pieces of fish required per can, deposit the correct number fish pieces into a pocket wheel. Once the fish pieces are in the mould of the pocket wheel the mould is closed and the fish are then ejected by means of a pneumatic plunger from the mould into an empty can. The filled can is then taken by conveyor for further processing.

   

  The Autopacker does not weigh or check the size of each fish. The number of fish pieces per can is pre-set before or during a production shift by means of selector knobs on the main gearbox cover. The number of pieces per can required is determined by the total mass required divided by the average mass per fish piece to be canned. This may result in some cans being overweight and others underweight. The most popular method of correcting underweight cans is to have the inspectors after the Autopacker, that check for any abnormalities, to add a loose fish piece to any can that looks under filled. Fish that has been graded by size before processing in the Autopacker would further reduce the incidence of underweight cans leaving the Autopacker.
