Yellow or claybank powder, which is soluble in water, ethanol, acetic acid solvents. Almost insoluble in ethanol, petroleum ether, oil, chloroform and other organic solvents. In case meeting with lead acetate will occur precipitation. It can be adsorbed by activated carbon. Its color will be varied with the pH value change. 

During acidic solution with PH range around 2 ~ 7 range, the colour will display yellow and will not be changed. It display orange yellow during alkaline solution,with good light resistance, not good heat resistance.

The main coloring ingredient is carthamine.
