California Wine History
The state of California boasts a long and rich winemaking history dating back to the late 1700's. Spanish missionaries first planted vineyards to produce wine for religious services. Later in the mid-1800's the great California Gold Rush began. The discovery of gold attracted immigrants from around the world. Some of these gold-seekers found the fertile valleys and perfect climate were similar to Europe's wine-producing regions. Incorporating on these conditions, they planted new vineyards, which greatly expanded wine production in the state.
