Starbucks will launch artificial meat products in the Asian market

September 15, 2020

Starbucks said it will add plant-based protein foods and beverages to the menus of Asian stores starting this month, including company products such as Impossible Foods, Beyond Meat, and OATLY. Starbucks said it is launching products that meet local tastes and preferences in markets such as Hong Kong, Singapore, New Zealand, Taiwan and Thailand.

Starbucks wants to make artificial meat products more in line with the tastes of consumers in different regions. For example, Impossible Foods puffs and sandwiches will be launched in Hong Kong, and hamburger patties of artificial meat will be launched in Singapore.

In February of this year, Starbucks launched a Beyond Meat breakfast sandwich in Canada. In April, it officially introduced artificial meat products into the Chinese market, including different beef green sauce pasta, classic lasagna and American chutney rolls. The raw materials are provided by Beyond Meat. In June, Starbucks added artificial meat products to its American menu for the first time, as a breakfast sandwich made with Impossible Foods sausages.

Starbucks set a long-term goal of becoming a more sustainable "resource-active" company in January this year. Patrick O. Brown, founder and CEO of Impossible Foods, stated that Starbucks "committed to adding more plant-based ingredients to the menu, which is a new benchmark for large companies."

In terms of beverages, Starbucks will also launch beverages containing more plant protein, such as OATLY's Coco Macchiato in Malaysia.
