| The mango (Mangifera indica) is of the oldest cultivated plant, with a cultivation history of more than 4,000 years. It is native to southern Asia, especially Burma and eastern India. It was introduced into China by the famous Chinese Buddhist monk, Xuanzang, at the beginning of the 6th century. In China, it grows mainly in the provinces of Hainan, Guangdong, Guangxi and Fujian. The mango is nutritious, with the most ²-carotene of all kinds of fruit and a high content of vitamin C and Vitamin A. Mango fruits are kidney shaped, ovate or (rarely) round. The flesh of a mango is peachlike and juicy. The flavor is pleasant and rich and high in sugars and acid. The mango enjoys the reputation of being the King of Tropical fruits. |
