beeswax Comb Foundation
Processing:
All of the beeswax that we use in comb foundation manufacture is first heated to approx 110 deg C before being micro filtered to remove all dross and moisture. This ensures that when you buy our comb foundation, you are only paying for pure beeswax.
The filtered liquid beeswax then passes to the “Weed Process” sheeting machine. This converts the beeswax from a liquid state into a continuous flat sheet and is one of the secrets of making high quality comb foundation. During this process, the beeswax gains greatly in elasticity and strength to the point where a piece of cold comb foundation can be scrunched up and then flattened out again without breaking.
The rolls of sheet then pass to the automatic milling machine. The pure beeswax sheet passes between two precision engraved rollers which imprint the pattern onto the beeswax.
The continuous sheet is then cut to width before being cut to length. The finished sheets are then weighed before being packed in cartons.
Throughout the process, stringent quality control checks are continuously carried out.
The life of our Comb Foundation if stored in its original packaging in dry conditions is indefinite. Because of its purity, it is not attacked by wax moths.
We manufacture 5 different thicknesses of Comb Foundation:
Manuka Special (MS) - 10 sheets per kg in Full Depth
Extra strength comb foundation produced mainly for Manuka honey production but is also excellent for honey or brood.
The extra wax in the midrib is partly used by the bees to draw out the cells. Because bees use nectar to produce beeswax, the extra wax in the comb foundation means that they will store more nectar, increasing your profit.
Manuka Special is designed to be used with grooved bottom and top bars. This allows the bees to attach the comb as strongly at the bottom as the top and sides.
Due to its extra strength, thickness and firm attachment to the bottom bar, experience has shown that Manuka Special comb foundation withstands the pricking and extraction process well.
Extra Heavy Brood (EHB) - 13 sheets per kg in Full Depth
Midway in weight between MB and MS. Can be used anywhere in the hive. There is more wax used per sheet but the advantage is that the bees draw it out very quickly and it is very strong.
Medium Brood (MB) - 17 sheets per kg in Full Depth
Medium weight foundation which can be used in the brood nest and honey boxes.
Light Brood (LB) - 21 sheets per kg in Full Depth
Midway in weight between TS and MB. Used for comb honey but can be put into the brood nest if necessary. Also made from cappings beeswax.
Thin Super (TS) - 24.25 sheets per kg in Full Depth
Made especially for use in the production of Comb Honey. Because this comb foundation needs to be of high purity and a very light colour, only cappings beeswax can be accepted for conversion.
