Variety
In the northern region of Peru, Piura there are two different types of table grapes, with or without seeds.
Notable among the varieties Red Globe. Its grains are thick and harvesting takes place from mid-August or early September until December.
The seedless been marketed for several decades for the production of raisins, hardly consumed fresh due to their smaller size. However, special culture techniques (pruning, cluster thinning, girdling or application of exogenous plant growth regulators) made seedless grapes reach marketable size and quality to improve their appearance, passing in a few years to be the most demanded by consumers. In the region from the 80's of XX century the Department of Viticulture and Enology of Agriculture SENASA is developing a program to introduce and select mainly seedless varieties. Currently, about 1,000 hectares cultivated highlighting Sugraone, Flame Seedless, Dawn Seedless, Centennial Seedless, Thompson Seedless, Autumn Seedless and Crimsom Seedless.
Nutrition and health
Among the nutrients that provide the grapes include sugars and vitamins. The first (mostly glucose and fructose) provide calories to the body, while the latter (folic acid and vitamin B6) in the production of red and white cells in the synthesis of genetic material and the formation of antibodies of the immune system so they are especially recommended during the first months of pregnancy because it can prevent spina bifida or different alterations in the developing nervous system of the fetus. They also help the vitamins, especially B6, to maintain the normal functions of the brain.
The phenolic compounds present in grapes are responsible for their color and flavor, also providing a potent antioxidant. Among them are the subject of numerous investigations tannins, anthocyanins and flavonoids, to be effective in blocking the growth of tumors.
In particular flavonoids promote circulation in the arteries through vasodilation that increases blood flow and prevents arteriosclerosis. Because of these characteristics grapes strengthens the good condition of the arteries and therefore heart.
