Schisandra is recorded in Lei Gong Pao Zhi Lu, an ancient medicinal book published in the Southern Dynasty (420-589 A. D.). Schisandra is used as a herbal medicine and have effects on constringency, kidney tonifying, mind tranquillizing, Qi supplementing and promoting production of body fluid.
Modern Research------liver support
The most outstanding health benefit of schisandra extract is liver support. Animal studies suggest that schisandra may protect liver from toxic damage, improve liver function and stimulate liver cell regrowth.
The active compounds are thought to be the lignan compounds such as schisandrins (up to 0.12% in the fruit), schizandrol A and schizandrol B. The pharmacological studies of individual lignanes have shown that schzandrin C and its derivatives are effective in hepatitis treatment. Gomisin A and schizandrin B stimulate the regeneration of liver tissue. Schizandrins A, C and gomisin protect tissues from the influence of neurotoxic substances. Most schisandra lignanes possess hepatoprotective properties.
